I want to argue in favour of a modern take on the broad medieval conception of higher learning in which the study of language or music should sit happily side by side with the study of maths or science, and a reaffirmation for new generations of the roots of the expression ‘liberal arts’ to the classical notion that liberal education is what people need to be free citizens not slaves.
